The port of Sanary
The bay of Sanary-sur-Mer and Six Fours les Plages in the Var is lined with the beach of Bonne Grâce, or ‘Brutal Beach’ in the jargon of its windsurfers, and enclosed by the Embiez archipelago.
The Villa Hippocampe bed and breakfast overlooks the bay near Cap Nègre, offering exceptional sunsets that will enchant you during your Palmetto aperitifs served on the Hippocampe’s beaches. A magical moment!!!
Sanary is built around its picturesque marina and fishing port, home to the famous Provençal fishing boats known as ‘pointus’. Unmissable!
The heart of the village is laid out with pedestrianised streets, typical of the charm of the Var region, where you can discover churches, exhibition halls, shops, and, of course, restaurants and terraces.
Sanary also boasts its famous Wednesday market, voted the most beautiful market in France.
The history of Sanary is intertwined with personalities such as Michel Pacha, Canon Galli, German exiled writers, Aldous Huxley, and the “Mousquemers” (legendary divers Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Philippe Tailliez, and Frédéric Dumas).
The bay of Sanary is the playground for various water activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, water skiing, scuba diving, parasailing, not to mention swimming and relaxation!!
The Embiez Islands
Very close to our bed and breakfast, your host, a skipper will introduce you to a flagship destination in the Var: the Embiez archipelago, on the Hippocampe’s rigid-inflatable boat. The archipelago consists of five islands and islets, including the Grand Rouveau, an ornithological reserve, and another belonging to Paul Ricard.
A true paradise for swimming, snorkelling, and diving, these islands are surrounded by crystal-clear water with vibrant colours and abundant marine life.
The main island is a genuine haven of greenery and wild coves, sheltering 90% of Mediterranean plant species and serving as a refuge for birds.
Paul Ricard, who purchased it in 1950, was a remarkable businessman, a builder, and a visionary, but he was also an early environmentalist and an artist.
Sanary’s market: treasure of the Var
An exceptional attraction just a two-kilometre walk from the bed and breakfast at Villa Hippocampe! Every Wednesday morning, the streets of the village are filled with merchants and vendors, between the port and the pedestrian alleys.
Southern atmosphere, colours, and scents, sea and sun – that’s the magic of the Sanary market, which has been voted the most beautiful market in France.
During the summer season, a daily night market, surrounded by various festivities, showcases local craftsmanship.
Renting a bed and breakfast in Sanary-sur-Mer is an opportunity to fully experience the authenticity of the Var coast.
The Calanques of Cassis

Exceptional tourist sites
The Calanques National Park, established in 2012, now protects this unique natural world heritage site which is separated from Cap Canaille by the village of Cassis. While the best way to visit the calanques is undoubtedly by boat, it is nonetheless a breath-taking experience to take the Route des Crêtes, which winds through the scrubland between La Ciotat and Cassis, treating you to endless sumptuous panoramas. A stone’s throw away you will find Marseille: the old port, Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Frioul islands, the Château d’If, and the MUCEM, not forgetting the Vélodrome stadium!
In Sanary, it’s not just about the private beaches. To the east of the bay, the island of Porquerolles, jewel of the Mediterranean, alternates between white sandy beaches, vineyards, and pine forests. It now also hosts the unmissable Carmignac Foundation.
Further to the east, there’s the Gulf of Saint Tropez and Grimaud.
Bandol
Cuvée Hippocampe is a rosé wine produced at the La Suffrène estate in La Cadière d’Azur. Brimming with sunshine and symbolic of holidays in the south, it will enhance your aperitifs and dinners in our seaside bed and breakfast. And why not take back a few boxes of sunshine and memories when you leave? Shipping is possible.
The terroir of Bandol wines also extends to neighbouring municipalities: La Cadière d’Azur, Le Beausset, Le Castellet, Ollioules, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, Saint-Cyr, and Sanary.
But Bandol is also the famous seafront promenade where shops alternate with sunny terraces, amidst shaded alleys and one of the largest marinas on the French Riviera.
It is also the renowned Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Castellet, a major venue for motorsports in Europe and considered one of the most beautiful circuits in the world.
And, of course, its beaches, the island of Bendor…
