Coastal path
The most spectacular coastal path in the Var. Wild coves, Mediterranean panoramas, unspoilt nature.
on foot
Your walk on the coastal path from Villa Hippocampe
The coastal path can be reached directly from Villa Hippocampe through a private access across our tropical park. No car journey needed. Turn right towards Sanary (2 km), or left towards Les Embiez and Le Brusc (4 km).
The path runs along the coast for dozens of kilometres between Bandol and Sanary, offering exceptional views of the bay, the islands and the rocky coves.
The path is open all year round: allow 20 minutes to Sanary at a leisurely pace, 40 minutes to Le Brusc and the island of Le Gaou. Wear good shoes (rocks can be slippery), and bring water and a hat in summer. Easy level, suitable for everyone from age eight.
JACQUES' TIPS
Jacques recommends walking towards Le Brusc to discover the Gaou lagoon, a spectacular natural area. After a drink on the harbour at Le Brusc, you can return to Villa Hippocampe more directly along the pavement. In summer, avoid the hottest hours (11 am–4 pm) — the path offers no shade. Spring and autumn are ideal: mild temperatures, magnificent light, an almost deserted path.
Wildlife and plants along the path
The coastal path crosses several remarkable Mediterranean ecosystems. Aleppo pines and umbrella pines dominate the tree cover, their roots clinging to the limestone rocks. Kermes oaks, strawberry trees, mastic trees and rockroses make up the scrubland, which gives off its scent of resin and honey in the sun.
On the sea side, gulls — gabian in Provençal —, cormorants and seagulls nest in the cliffs. In the translucent water of the coves, salema, rainbow wrasse and saddled bream swim among rocks covered in Posidonia seagrass.
In spring, the path is covered in wild flowers: white asphodels, yellow everlastings, dwarf irises and wild orchids in less trodden areas. Autumn sees the strawberry-tree berries ripen — blackbirds and thrushes feast on them before migrating.
Frequently asked questions
CAN YOU WALK THE PATH WITH YOUNG CHILDREN?
Yes, as far as Sanary (2 km, 20 min). The path is suitable for children from six or seven who are used to walking. The section towards Les Embiez is longer (4 km) and less suitable for very young children. No pushchairs: the terrain is too uneven. Choose the Sanary direction, along Bonne Grâce beach.
IS THE PATH OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND?
Yes. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal: mild temperatures, magnificent light, abundant flowers, an almost deserted path. Summer is possible, but avoid the hottest hours. Winter is pleasant too: Mediterranean mildness, exceptional clarity — but check the weather (a strong mistral makes walking difficult).
CAN YOU SWIM FROM THE PATH?
Yes, there are several accessible coves between Villa Hippocampe and Sanary. Some require a careful climb down between the rocks — pack your swimsuit. Very clear water, rocky seabed, variable depth. Watch out for sea urchins in some areas — water shoes are recommended. Jacques can point you to the best coves depending on sea conditions.
